Jack Vettriano was born in Scotland in 1951. After leaving school at age 16, he worked as a mining engineer. Vettriano did not begin painting until age 21, when a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolor paints. For the next 14 years, he spent his spare time teaching himself how to paint before becoming confident enough to show his work to the public.
In 1989 he offered two works to the annual exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy, both of which were sold on the first day. Since then, his success has grown dramatically. Holding solo exhibitions throughout the world, Vettriano finally brought his work to the U.S. in 1999. In 2000 the BBC made a documentary on Vettriano. Vettriano's work has become extremely popular throughout the world, with sales of over 500,000 prints.
