Roy Lichtenstein was born in New York City in 1923. At age 14 he began taking art classes
at the Parsons School of Design and later studied at the Art Students League. He attended college at Ohio State University, receiving his BFA and
MFA degrees after completing his military service during World War II. In 1957 he moved back to New York, where he continued teaching.
In 1962 Lichtenstein had an exhibition in which he first showed his signature enlarged comic strip pieces.
His works were painstakingly painted to appear like simple photoenlargements,
showing detailed dots, grain, and canvas patterns. Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol
are acknowledged as the leaders of the Pop Art movement. Lichtenstein also did work in sculpture and painted several murals, as well as doing
Abstract Expressionist work. Lichtenstein died in 1997.
