Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was born in Mexico City in 1907, although she claimed to have been born in 1910. She was stricken with polio at age six. Kahlo first met her future husband, Diego Rivera, while attending the National Preparatory School, where he was commissioned to paint a mural. At age 18, she was involved in a bus accident, which left her hospitalized and immobile for a month. It was while she was recovering from her injuries that she began painting. Once she was well enough to leave the hospital, a friend introduced Kahlo to Mexico City's artistic crowd, which included a reintroduction to Rivera.

Kahlo and Rivera were married in 1929. During their turbulent relationship, which included a one year divorce, both Kahlo and Rivera had numerous affairs, including Rivera having an affair with Kahlo's sister and Kahlo having affairs with famous Communist Leon Trotsky as well as several women. She was arrested for Trotsky's murder, but was released. Despite their turbulent relationship, Kahlo and Rivera greatly helped each other's careers. He suggested that she adopt the traditional Mexican dress for which she became known, and which she is shown wearing in many of her works, while she was his most trusted critic. Kahlo died in 1954 of a possible suicide, being depressed due to the amputation of her right leg.
