Merryl Jaye

Ms. Jaye began her artistic career as a singer and songwriter. Her singing career began when she won a contest at age 14 and began to sing light opera. She later toured with Johnny Mathis as part of the Young Americans, and continued her career in a nightclub act she formed with her husband. She began songwriting after the birth of her son.

At age 40, she began painting Cape Cod-style cottages. Eventually, she adopted African American themes as the focus of her work, choosing to use friends and acquaintances as her models. Most of her art depicts scenes of African American women and girls in idealized settings.
