John Holyfield was born and raised in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and attended Howard University and the University of D.C. to study graphic design. Creating artwork depicting themes of family, religion, and African-American culture, his Baptist upbringing shows in the spirituality of his work. Holyfield lists Ernie Barnes and Norman Rockwell as his artistic influences. Working primarily with oils, he commonly spends two months on each of his paintings. Holyfield has been painting full time since 1991.
