James Denmark

James Denmark was born in Winter Haven, Florida, in 1936. Artistic talent ran in his family, having a grandmother who was a wire sculptor and quilter, as well as a bricklayer grandfather who designed custom molds. Denmark attended Florida A&M on a track scholarship, where he received a Bachelor of Arts. He later continued his art education with the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.

Denmark's work is influenced by abstract expressionism and the work of Ernest Crichlow, Jacob Lawrence, and Romare Bearden. He has demonstrated his versatility by using several media in his work, including collage, woodcuts, watercolors, and lithography. Denmark worked for several years teaching art in the New York City public school system. He now lives in South Carolina.
