Ernest Crichlow was born June 19, 1914, in Brooklyn, New York, to Barbadian immigrants. In 1930 he joined the Harlem Artists Guild under the tutelage of Augusta Savage. Crichlow's formal training consisted of work at NYU and the Arts Student League. At the Harlem Art Center, he developed friendships with many other young artists, including Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, and Charles White. His work was shown with work by Bearden, Lawrence, and Norman Lewis at New York City's Downtown Gallery in 1942 in what is thought to be the first exhibition by black artists.
He co-founded the Cinque Gallery with Bearden and Lewis in 1969. He has taught art at several schools, including New York State University at New Paltz and the Brooklyn Museum art school.
