Howard Behrens

Howard Behrens was born in 1933 in Chicago and grew up in the Washington, D.C., area. He began painting when he had a broken leg as a young boy. His art education began when a junior college professor suggested that he become a medical artist. He received his bachelor's from the University of Maryland, then entered the Johns Hopkins University Medical Arts School. He eventually decided that medical illustration was not the right career path for him, so he returned to the University of Maryland to earn a master's degree. Behrens continued his art career with the U.S. Government Printing Office where he eventually rose to become their chief artist. During this period he experimented with various painting styles.

Behrens' unusual palette knife painting style gives his pieces a distinctive appearance. His love for warm climates shows in his choice of subject matter, where he has focused primarily on seascapes. Behrens lives in Washington, D.C., and travels the world with his wife, Judi.
