Annie Lee began painting at age ten. Shortly thereafter she won an art contest, receiving a
scholarship to the Art Institute of Chicago for a semester. She received a full scholarship to Northwestern University, but turned it down to get
married instead.
After working as an engineering clerk for a railroad, Lee restarted her art career by painting "Blue Monday," to communicate
her feelings about having to go to work on dreary Midwestern mornings, the first of her
works about everyday African American life. Today she is a successful artist, sculptor, and gallery owner.
